Uric acid (hereinafter referred to as UA — Uric Acid) is a metabolite formed through the oxidation of purines and is the main water-soluble antioxidant in the body. Hyperuricemia increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and hypertension, while low UA levels have been observed to reduce its protective effect in neurodegenerative diseases. This review analyzes the biology of UA, its relationship with cardiovascular diseases and aging, as well as its effects in neurodegenerative diseases, based on recent studies. It also examines the role of UA modulators, including allopurinol, febuxostat, and inosine. The conclusion discusses the predominance of the neuroprotective effects of UA and clinical recommendations.
