Investigation of the formation of defects on the surface of LiF crystals upon bombardment with cesium ions

In this work, we consider the experimental results of studies of the defects formation on the surface of LiF crystals under irradiation with ions using the methods of total current spectroscopy, SIMS, and the SRIM software package. The studies carried out in the LiF crystal under ion irradiation have shown that the impact mechanism of the defects formation realises, and the consecutive formation of cluster centers is observed up to their coalescence into colloidal centers. Under ion irradiation, a phase transition of the LiF crystal surface is observed with the formation of colloidal centers, followed by metallization of the surface, as well as the accumulation of clusters of neutral fluorine atoms (bubbles). It has been shown that irradiation with ions produces a large concentration of vacancies and interstitial defects on the surface and in the bulk of the crystal.
