The article offers a contrastive analysis of ironic speech acts in English and Uzbek. Irony has traditionally been treated as a stylistic trope resting on the reversal of meaning, yet the pragmatic approach allows it to be described as a purposeful communicative action endowed with illocutionary force. The study takes the inventory of illocutionary verbs as its point of departure: taunt, jibe, sneer, mock, hint and insinuate in English, and kinoya qilmoq, piching qilmoq, kesatmoq and shama qilmoq in Uzbek. Twelve dialogic fragments are examined – six from J. Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and O. Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest", and six from Tohir Malik's trilogy "Shaytanat" – each described according to a uniform set of four parameters. The analysis establishes three shared properties: membership in the assertive class, a reactive position within dialogue, and complex illocution in the act of hinting. Two systematic divergences are also identified. English organises the field primarily along a scale of aggressiveness, with the irony–sarcasm opposition at its centre, whereas Uzbek differentiates its subtypes according to the target of evaluation and the mode of veiling. Furthermore, English signals ironic intent chiefly through manner adverbials, authorial commentary and stage directions, while Uzbek recruits interrogative and evidential morphology, so that irony in Uzbek is grammatically marked to a greater degree than in English.
