The growth of digital communication has increased intercultural interaction among people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Maintaining politeness in online communication is essential for successful interaction and avoiding misunderstandings. This paper examines the pragmatic strategies of politeness used in intercultural online communication. Using Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory and Speech Act Theory as the theoretical framework, the study discusses how users employ indirect language, hedging, gratitude expressions, apologies, and emojis to maintain harmonious relationships in digital environments. The findings suggest that politeness strategies are influenced by cultural norms, communication context, and the characteristics of online platforms. The study highlights the importance of pragmatic competence for effective intercultural communication.
