This article examines the methodological foundations for developing students’ communicative competence in foreign language classes at higher education institutions. It analyzes the pedagogical value of communicative language teaching, task-based learning, role-playing, debates, project work, problem-based tasks, pair and group interaction, digital communication platforms, and reflective assessment. The paper argues that communicative competence cannot be reduced solely to grammatical knowledge or vocabulary acquisition; rather, it requires the integrated development of linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic, and intercultural components. Particular attention is paid to organizing foreign language lessons around authentic communicative situations, increasing students’ oral participation, supporting independent thinking, and developing a culture of academic communication. The article offers methodological recommendations for designing student-centered, interactive, and competence-based language classes in higher education. The findings may be used to improve syllabi, classroom tasks, and assessment criteria aimed at forming practical foreign language communication skills.
