This article analyzes ambiguous expressions (aimai hyōgen) in the Japanese language from linguistic and pragmatic perspectives. The study focuses on the grammatical, lexical, and discourse mechanisms that produce ambiguity and examines their communicative functions in real conversational contexts. In Japanese discourse, ambiguous expressions often function as strategies for maintaining social harmony, mitigating interpersonal conflict, and expressing politeness. The findings suggest that ambiguity in Japanese should be considered not only a grammatical phenomenon but also a sociopragmatic and cultural communication strategy.
