This article analyzes the role of the concept of discourse in modern linguistics and its manifestation in the genre of anecdotes. The study reveals the multilayered nature of discourse based on sociolinguistic, cognitive, cultural, and linguopragmatic approaches. Anecdotes are considered speech units that reflect social relations, national mentality, and cultural stereotypes, and the mechanisms underlying the emergence of humorous effects in them are analyzed. In addition, the interrelation between discourse and ideology, the acquisition of new meanings by linguistic units in context, and the important role of background knowledge are highlighted. The results of the study confirm that discourse is a complex phenomenon reflecting the interconnection between language, thought, and society.
