This article provides a comparative-typological analysis of gradual relations in the vowel systems of French and Uzbek at the paradigmatic level. The study examines the development of the concepts of phoneme and sound and presents the classification of vowels based on phonological paradigmatics and the theory of oppositions. Special attention is paid to articulatory features, including the degree of openness, labialization, and place of articulation. The findings demonstrate that gradation constitutes an essential feature of the phonological system and plays a significant role in the systematic classification of speech sounds.
