This article is devoted to an analysis of the ideological and artistic distinctiveness of the late prose of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, based on the works Peasants, The New Dacha, and In the Ravine, which constitute the so-called “rural trilogy.” The study examines the features of the artistic structure, thematic issues, the system of characters, and the author’s position. Special attention is paid to the transformation of the traditional peasant theme and the writer’s rejection of the populist idealization of village life. It is concluded that Chekhov developed a new type of socio-psychological prose based on the principles of objectivity, subtext, and artistic detail.
