This article examines the key principles of tertiary language didactics, with a focus on teaching German as a second or subsequent foreign language after English. Special attention is paid to cognitive teaching and learning based on the conscious comparison of languages (L1, L2, L3), the role of comprehension as the foundation of language acquisition, content- and text-oriented instruction, and the economization of the learning process. The paper highlights the importance of activating learners’ prior linguistic knowledge, developing language awareness, and using transfer bridges between related languages, particularly English and German. The study also addresses the sociolinguistic and educational context of German language learning in Central Asia, especially in Uzbekistan, where German is increasingly taught as a tertiary language. The lack of specialized teaching materials is identified as a major challenge, emphasizing the need for new didactic concepts and textbooks adapted to tertiary language learning.
