This article analyzes the formation and understanding of metaphor in discourse from the perspective of a cognitive-psychological approach. It describes the main types of cognitive representations formed by the human mind in the process of using language—text level, text base, situation model, and context model—and reveals their relationships. In particular, special attention is paid to the role these representations play in the processes of recognizing, interpreting, and pragmatically evaluating metaphor. The existing empirical limitations on the interpretation of metaphor as an interdomain adaptation within the framework of cognitive linguistics and systemic-functional grammar are also discussed.
