This article examines the development of football terminology as a layer of borrowed lexical items. English serves as the source language of football terminology, and its lexicon includes native English words, Latin–Greek elements, and borrowings from other languages. In Uzbek, the football lexicon mainly consists of borrowed terms that are phonologically, morphologically, and semantically adapted to the language system. The borrowing process is influenced by linguistic factors (lexical gaps, morphological integration) and extralinguistic factors (social, cultural, economic, and global communication). Intercultural contacts, international competitions, and mass media accelerate the incorporation of English terms into Uzbek. The article also explores the role of historical-etymological sources and Old English, Arabic–Persian, and Latin–Greek elements in the football lexicon. The study highlights the significance of football vocabulary from the perspectives of linguistics, comparative linguistics, and intercultural communication.
