In this article, the author considered theoretical interpretations of grammar, in particular, foreign language grammar. In the process of theoretical interpretation of the concept of “grammar”, he relied on the opinions of national and foreign methodologists and psychologists, since the grammatical units of the language or the grammatical aspect of speech are mainly discussed in the two aforementioned disciplines: methodology and psychology. The article analyzes such concepts as “active grammar”, “passive grammar”, “grammatical category” and “grammatical phenomenon”. Some theoretical foundations are given for the three aspects of a grammatical phenomenon - form, meaning, function. Also, explanations are given to such processes as the grammatical mechanism, its role in speech, grammatically automated skills of speech, and the study of grammatically ready material.
