This article analyzes the leading theoretical approaches to the formation and development of intercultural competence in the process of English language teaching. The study is based on the models of intercultural competence developed by M. Byram, D. Deardorff, and A. Fantini and A. Tirmizi, and explores the possibilities of integrating intercultural attitudes, cultural knowledge, communicative skills, and critical awareness into English language education. Based on these models, the theoretical foundations for the effective implementation of an intercultural approach in English language teaching are revealed.
