The article presents a comparison between four interrelated sociolinguistic concepts: code-switching, translanguaging, dialect shifting, and language mixing. Each concept is defined, its origins and underlying concepts are described, and how these concepts affect multilingual communication has been analyzed. Code-switching involves intentional or unintentional switching from one language to another; translanguaging involves the use of all available linguistic resources in a holistic manner; dialect shifting is employed to convey a social identity to the speakers of a single language, and language mixing is a means of referring to the creative blending of elements of two or more different languages in informal spoken communication. By examining the differences between these strategies, we have stressed the need for the development of adaptive frameworks which acknowledge multilingualism as a fundamental tool for the establishment of personal identity and the positive encouragement of learning and education.
