This article examines the pragmatic characteristics of English and Uzbek proverbs that express norms of speech etiquette appropriate for university-level (oak) students. Proverbs serve as culturally condensed texts that guide communicative behavior, regulate social interaction, and transmit ethical norms. The study aims to identify cross-cultural similarities and differences in the pragmatic functions of proverbs related to polite speech, respectful communication, and socially approved verbal conduct. Relying on descriptive, comparative, and pragmatic analysis, the research reveals that English and Uzbek proverbs highlight universal principles such as tactfulness, truthfulness, respect for others, and the value of silence, yet each language expresses them through culture-specific metaphors and social expectations. The findings emphasize the pedagogical importance of integrating proverb-based instruction into language learning for developing intercultural communicative competence among university students.
