The increasing integration of vocational education with the labor market has transformed apprenticeship from a predominantly pedagogical arrangement into a complex legal relationship involving education, employment, social protection and contractual responsibility. This article examines the legal nature of the apprenticeship contract, referred to in the legislation of Uzbekistan as the production training contract, and evaluates its relationship with the contractual mechanisms used in dual vocational education. The study applies doctrinal, comparative legal, systemic and functional methods to analyze the legislation of Uzbekistan, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as well as the International Labor Organization’s Quality Apprenticeships Recommendation, 2023 (No. 208). The article argues that an apprenticeship contract should be recognized as a distinct mixed legal institution situated at the intersection of labor law and education law. Its principal purpose is not merely the performance of productive work but the acquisition of a recognized occupational qualification under protected working and learning conditions. Based on comparative experience, the article proposes the introduction of a unified tripartite apprenticeship agreement, mandatory minimum contractual clauses, accreditation of training enterprises and workplace trainers, proportionate remuneration, social insurance, digital registration, quality monitoring and specialized dispute-resolution mechanisms. These measures may contribute to legal certainty, protection of learners and stronger employer participation in vocational education in Uzbekistan.
