This article provides a comprehensive analysis of military administration and the defense system in the Khiva Khanate (1511–1920) based on historical sources. It substantiates that the khanate’s geographical location—bordering nomadic tribes, the Emirate of Bukhara, Iran, and the Russian Empire—made its military-administrative organization a decisive factor in the viability of the state. The study is based on a comparative analysis of the works of local historians (Munis, Ogahiy, Bayoniy), documents of the khan’s chancery, reports of Russian military intelligence officers, and modern historiographical studies. Methodologically, the study applies historical-comparative, historical-genetic, source-study, content-analysis, systemic-structural, and interdisciplinary approaches, while the diversity of sources is assessed from a critical perspective.
