This article examines the role of literary theory in developing critical thinking skills through short stories in higher education. Despite the growing importance of critical thinking in modern education, literature teaching often remains focused on content comprehension rather than analytical engagement. The study aims to demonstrate how literary theory, combined with short stories and student-centered approaches, can enhance students’ analytical and interpretative abilities. It is based on qualitative analysis of theoretical sources and selected literary texts, particularly short stories by Ernest Hemingway and O. Henry. The findings reveal that literary theory provides a structured framework for text analysis, while short stories create favorable conditions for interpretation, inference, and evaluation. In addition, approaches such as Reader-Response and Problem-Based Learning increase student engagement and support independent thinking. The study concludes that the integration of literary theory and short stories offers an effective methodological approach for developing critical thinking in higher education.
