Classical Arabic grammarians worked hard to preserve the Arabic language by adapting non-Arabic terms and by using the potential capabilities of the Arabic phonological, morphological, and semantic systems to adapt foreign terms. This process was carried out by several methods that linguists relied on to preserve the originality of the Arabic language. Derivation is the most effective method of continuously modernizing the Arabic language. Derivation allows the Arabic language to adopt foreign terms and adapt them to itself; it also serves as the most important way to enrich the Arabic language with local words that are semantically equivalent to foreign terms. The ability of other methods of adapting foreign terms to Arabic is tested by the mechanism of comparing them with derivation. This mechanism is based on five criteria: (1) semantic preservation; (2) easy cognitive access; (3) a set of morphological patterns; (4) the ability to recreate according to the set of patterns; (5) the use of the Arabic language's own defense system. The results of this comparison show that derivation is the safest and most effective way to adapt and assimilate foreign terms into the Arabic language, and it should be called the "trusted guardian" of the Arabic language.
