This article analyzes the importance of the institution of accountability in ensuring the openness and transparency of law enforcement activities. The author gives special consideration to the legal status of public councils within internal affairs bodies, highlighting their role as a "bridge" between civil society and the state. The article also puts forward proposals and reflections on modern mechanisms for exercising public oversight and on promising ways to bring the system closer to the people.
