This article examines the evolution of criminal law regulation of liability for extortion in the context of the historical development of legal approaches to the protection of property and individual rights. The main stages in the formation of the institution of extortion in pre-revolutionary and Soviet criminal law are analyzed, and specific features of the qualification of this offense, as well as problems of its normative consolidation, are identified. Particular attention is paid to a comparative legal analysis of foreign models of criminal law regulation of extortion, including those of the Russian Federation, Germany, and France. A separate section is devoted to the development and modernization of the criminal legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, including an analysis of amendments to Article 165 of the Criminal Code driven by socio-economic transformations and the digitalization of public relations. The study concludes that the criminal law construction of extortion has developed progressively, adapting to contemporary forms of criminality and enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement through the clarification of the objective and subjective elements of the corpus delicti.
