The article examines the political and socio-economic processes that made the late ninth and the first half of the tenth century a turning point in the history of the Arab–Muslim world. During this period, the Abbasid Caliphate experienced a profound crisis and de facto fragmentation: the central authority of the caliphs was weakened by palace intrigues and regional separatism, independent dynasties emerged in the provinces, and, for the first time, multiple rival rulers laid claim to the title of caliph. At the same time, this era was marked by a flourishing of culture and science in several regional centers (for example, under the Samanids) and by a transformation of the caliphate’s socio-political structure. Drawing on Arabic chronicles (al-Ya‘qubi, al-Tabari, al-Mas‘udi) and the works of historians (Bartold, Filshteinsky, Rakhmanova, among others), the paper identifies the key events and trends of the late ninth–early tenth centuries, their interconnections, and their impact on the subsequent evolution of Arab-Islamic civilization.
