This article aims to explore the formation of the institution of defenders - representatives of the indigenous population - within the advocacy system of the Turkestan region's judicial and legal framework. It introduces into scientific discourse information from the Central State Archive of Uzbekistan about the first legal defenders admitted to participate in the region's courts. The article examines their activities and the local authorities' attitude towards defense representatives from the native population. An analysis of research based on 19th-century Russian Empire legislation is conducted, comparing it with reliable facts uncovered in the archive.
