The history of the study of architectural monuments of the Srednezarafshan oasis, both in the past and in the present, is reflected in numerous historical sources and literature. The ancient fortress and ruins of the oasis are repeatedly mentioned in the works of the Russian orientalist academician V. V. Bartold and other Russian researchers. Examples of this are the studies of K. A. Inostrantsev, N. Veselovsky, P. Lerch, V. V. Tarn, Tsakhau, Tomashek, Markvart. The article examines the sources recorded by them.
