This article examines the distinctive features of handicraft production in Khorezm during the Early Medieval period, its decline and subsequent recovery, and the factors influencing these changes. The study explores the impact of transformations in the urban economic system, political and social instability, nomadic migrations, urbanization, and international trade and economic relations on the development of handicrafts. Drawing on archaeological materials, the study examines the state and patterns of development of handicraft sectors such as pottery, metalworking, blacksmithing, jewelry making, and textile production, highlighting the predominance of household-based craft production. The findings indicate that handicraft production experienced decline and disruption in the 4th–5th centuries, whereas the revival of economic activity and urban life in the 6th–8th centuries contributed to the renewed development of several branches of handicraft production. The export of locally produced silver vessels, leather goods, and composite bows by Khorezmian craftsmen during this period also indicates the growing integration of handicraft production into market relations and long-distance trade. In the 9th–10th centuries, increasing urbanization and the expansion of international trade and economic relations created favorable conditions for the further development of handicraft production.
