This article examines the pedagogical significance of the modern assessment process and presents the theoretical and methodological foundations of assessment. It analyzes the criteria of pedagogical diagnostics and their theoretical foundations. The article also substantiates the need to shift from traditional forms of assessment to diagnostic and criterionreferenced assessment, while analyzing the content, purpose, objectives, and main criteria of pedagogical diagnostics. In addition, it demonstrates the possibilities of diagnostic assessment in determining not only students’ final learning outcomes but also their level of acquisition of specific knowledge, skills, and competencies. The article provides a practical analysis of the development of diagnostic tasks, types of tasks, and the selection of appropriate indicators for these tasks based on a text.
