Abstract. This article empirically examines students’ independent thinking, information selection and evaluation culture, critical analysis skills, and level of media literacy in the context of globalization and the expansion of the digital information environment. The study involved 1,250 students from five higher education institutions. A survey was conducted to examine respondents’ patterns of using information sources, methods of determining the reliability of information, fact-checking practices, and experience of independent decision-making. The findings reveal a certain discrepancy between students’ self-assessments and their actual information behavior. The study also substantiates the need to further develop media literacy in higher education, strengthen students’ skills in working with scholarly sources, and improve educational mechanisms aimed at fostering critical thinking.
