Annotatsiya

This study investigates the critical historiographical and methodological framework applied by the prominent Damascene scholar, exegete, and traditionist Abu al-Fida Ismail ibn Kathir toward Israelite narratives (Isrā’īliyyāt) within his comprehensive universal chronicle, Al-Bidāya wa al-Nihāya. Classical Muslim historiography frequently incorporated biblical and extra-biblical lore transmitted through converts to contextualize pre-Islamic prophetic chronologies and the creation of the cosmos. However, Ibn Kathir established rigorous epistemic criteria that departed significantly from early uncritical compilation techniques, such as those found in al-Tabari’s historical compendium. The objective of this research is to evaluate the criteria used by Ibn Kathir to identify anomalous (gharīb) and rejected (munkar) reports, determine the function of permissible Israelite materials in his text, and elucidate his critical text-historical method. Employing comparative-historical, text-critical, and hadith analytical methods, this paper explores primary narrative examples, including the mythical figure ‘Uj ibn ‘Unaq, the foundational history of the Ka’ba, the tales surrounding Harut and Marut, and Edenic narratives attributed to Wahb ibn Munabbih. The findings demonstrate that Ibn Kathir divided narratives into three distinct theological categories, rejecting outright any account conflicting with Qur’anic inerrancy, authentic prophetic traditions, or rational-historical plausibility. The scholar systematically deployed both chain-of-transmission (isnād) evaluation and rigorous content criticism (matn) using linguistic nuances and scriptural parallels. Consequently, Ibn Kathir permitted neutral Isrā’īliyyāt strictly as non-probative contextual embellishments rather than doctrinal proofs. The results affirm that his work represents a foundational shift toward source criticism and rational scrutiny in classical Islamic historiographical methodology.
