This article provides a comparative analysis of the history of the German population in the Bukhara, Samarkand, and Navoi regions of Uzbekistan within two major periods. The first period covers the years of Soviet modernization, from 1950 to 1990, while the second encompasses the years of national independence, from 1991 to 2025. The study examines the role of ethnic Germans in the economic, social, and cultural development of the region, their mechanisms of adaptation, and the evolution of their relations with the local population over different periods. The analysis demonstrates that the role of the diaspora transformed from a factor of production into a factor of cultural mediation, while adaptation evolved from initially forced integration to voluntary belonging and transnational choice. The author introduces the concept of the “integration paradox” and proposes a typology of two regional models.
