This article analyzes the significance and representation of the concept "east" in the stories of Maugham, emphasizes the emergence of a "character concept" in the writer's work - the type of an Englishman on the "outskirts of the empire". The meaning of the concept "east", its semantic component is determined by S. Maugham's many years of experience, his knowledge of island life, a certain modality, which determined the choice of theme, conflict and a special hero of his "eastern stories." The concept of "East" in the stories of S. Maugham represents a wide palette of representations (character, landscape, elements of culture, clothing, rituals), therefore, we can assert the significance of this concept in the writer's work.
