This article analyzes the artistic representation of landscape within the semantic field of the concept “East” in W. Somerset Maugham’s short stories. Landscape elements are examined in harmony with national-cultural connotations, exoticism, and the psychological experiences of the characters, offering a scholarly approach to their semantic role in revealing conceptual meaning. Special attention is paid to the significance of the Eastern landscape as an emotional component of the text and as an indicator of the character’s psychological state. W. Somerset Maugham’s long residence on the islands also enabled him to adapt to local conditions and to reconstruct, through artistic description, the individual-spatial features characteristic of a specific geographical setting.
