This article is devoted to the study of the functional role of substandard vocabulary in the fantasy novel by G.A. Dolgaya “Gods of the Middle World” and its influence on the formation of the author’s idiostyle. The paper examines a wide range of non-standard linguistic devices, such as colloquialisms, youth slang and jargon, archaisms and historicisms, professionalisms and poeticisms. The research is based on the works of renowned Russian dialectologists such as R.I. Avanesov, E.A. Zemskaya, L.L. Kasatkin, S.I. Ozhegov, E.O. Oparina, D. Savina, and F.P. Filin. The methodological basis for the study was a comprehensive philological analysis, including contextual, comparative and functional-stylistic methods. As a result of the study, it was established that substandard vocabulary is not a random element, but a system-forming component of the idiostyle of the author G.A. Dolgaya, since through its multifunctional and targeted use, key artistic tasks are solved, such as the creation of a realistic and multifaceted artistic world, where everyday reality contrasts with the historical and epic; deep speech and psychological characterization of the characters; and the achievement of a vivid stylistic and emotional effect. The author's idiostyle is characterized by a focus on synthesizing elements from different styles, attention to historical and contemporary nuances of speech, as well as lyricism and irony. Substandard vocabulary in the fantasy novel under study serves as a powerful tool for constructing a complex narrative and is a marker of the author's unique style.
