This article is devoted to the linguo-contrastive analysis of English and Russian proverbs containing the component “human”, with the aim of identifying universal and national-cultural features within them. A semantic analysis of English and Russian proverbs shows that, despite the universal nature of the concept under consideration, English and Russian proverbs demonstrate differences in imagery and moral-ethical values. Anthropocentric proverbs reflect the main characteristics of a person – thinking, speaking, diligence or laziness, social status, attitude toward others, toward nature, and so on. Proverbs in the English and Russian languages with the component “human” reflect both universal and national-cultural characteristics of the languages and peoples. The universality of the concept “human” is expressed in the fact that every individual possesses both positive and negative personality traits. The national-specific aspects of proverbs with the notion “human” lie in the fact that each nation perceives and portrays a person differently, and this perception reflects the national characteristics of the people shaped through centuries of historical experience. The results of linguistic studies of proverbs have both theoretical and practical significance and can be used for linguistic-theoretical and linguistic-contrastive purposes, as well as for linguistic-didactic and methodological purposes.
