This article deals with the issues based on analyzing the figurative meanings of words and their activation in relation to literal meanings from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Meanings in language are multilayered and dynamic phenomena closely connected with human cognition, experience, and imagination. For example, the word concrete, originally used to denote a building material, is now frequently employed in the sense of “real” or “specific.” Similarly, apple in a child’s perception may represent not fruit, but a technological brand. Such semantic shifts arise from cognitive mechanisms such as metaphor and metonymy. The paper highlights differences in semantic activation among different age groups – children, adolescents, and the elderly – demonstrating the interaction between language and thought. Moreover, the study analyzes how cultural, psychological, and social factors influence semantic expansion and how new meanings emerge through conceptual reorganization in the human mind. This approach allows language to be interpreted as a complex, multilayered semantic system that is inseparably linked with cognition, perception, and cultural evolution, revealing the creative and dynamic nature of meaning transformation.
