This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the major changes occurring in the lexical system of modern English. Special attention is given to semantic shifts, neologisms, archaisms, and lexical borrowings, each examined in terms of their role in language development, causes of emergence, usage in modern discourse, and functional significance within the socio-cultural context. Drawing upon the research of prominent linguists on contemporary lexical processes, the study employs classificatory and comparative analytical methods to investigate each lexical unit based on its formation, semantic load, and contextual usage. This approach makes it possible to identify the socio-linguistic causes of lexical change and understand their role in modern English. The research highlights key aspects of each lexical phenomenon – such as semantic transformation, methods of creating new units, the function of archaisms in poetic and historical texts, and the high adaptability of English to borrow from other languages – with concrete examples. Particular emphasis is placed on how neologisms reflect new social realities such as technological advancement, the internet, environmental issues, and the pandemic. The article offers a multidisciplinary perspective – spanning linguistics, sociology, and cultural studies – on the dynamic state of English today. The findings illustrate the adaptive nature of language and scientifically explain how lexical units evolve in response to social needs.
