Literary analysis of doris lesinng’s works: “the grass is singing” and “to room nineteen”

Doris Lessing (1919-2013) was a distinguished British writer whose works portray the transformations and conflicts of the twentieth century. A central theme in her writing is the depiction of social and economic inequalities. In her first novel, The Grass is Singing, the character of Mary embodies cultural and social clashes shaped by colonial and gendered hierarchies. In contrast, her short story To Room Nineteen explores the inner conflict of Susan, an intellectual woman constrained by domestic roles, whose struggle with psychological pressure ends tragically. This research aims to examine these two works comparatively, focusing on the author’s worldview, the psychological depth of her characters, and the recurring motifs of personal freedom and oppression. Consideration is given to the historical context, literary environment, and socio-political influences that shaped Lessing’s creativity. The analysis employs sociological, biographical, comparative, and psychological methods. Findings suggest that both works incorporate bildungsroman elements, reflecting characters’ inner quests for identity.
