Annotatsiya

This article investigates the historical and cultural roots of imprecations, tracing their evolution from the religious, political, and mythological frameworks of ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece to their modern manifestations in Uzbek, Russian, and English-speaking societies. Far from being merely spontaneous linguistic expressions of anger, frustration, or vengeance, imprecations are examined as deeply embedded discursive tools that have historically served as mechanisms of social control, moral enforcement, and even divine justice. Drawing from a wide array of mythological, religious, and folkloric sources, the study explores how curses operate within collective memory and cultural identity, often reflecting broader structures of power, belief, and tradition. Through anthropological and sociolinguistic perspectives, the paper reveals the performative and symbolic functions of imprecations in both historical and contemporary contexts, illustrating their adaptability to shifting communicative norms while preserving their connection to emotion, resistance, identity, and social cohesion. Curses remain culturally meaningful, potent, and ideologically charged expressions across time.
