The article examines the metapragmatic aspects of slang and taboo vocabulary functioning in modern Spanish. Based on the analysis of questionnaires, interviews, and corpus data, the main tendencies of native speakers' metalinguistic reflection regarding substandard lexical units are identified, as well as their connection with the social characteristics of speakers and the parameters of the communicative situation. The significant role of metapragmatic factors in regulating the actual speech use of slang and taboo words is demonstrated. Universal and culture-specific features of the metapragmatic dimension of Spanish are discussed in comparison with other European languages. The results are interpreted in light of the general principles of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and the theory of metalinguistic reflection. Prospects for further research in this area and possibilities for practical application in lexicography, teaching, and intercultural communication are outlined.
