This article discusses the role and importance of phraseological units in modern English linguistics as an integral part of linguistics, as well as the research conducted to date and the scientific research being carried out at present. Some phraseological units are analyzed in grammatical and semantic terms. Not only are specific types of phraseological units discussed in detail, but examples of these types and their translations are discussed in detail. In particular, the incomparable role of figurative meanings, in particular metaphor, metonymy, and functional similarity, in the formation of phraseological units is emphasized. Looking back at the history of the study of phraseology and phraseological units, we can see that this field initially appeared in literary studies. When translating a poetic fragment involving a certain literary work or genre from one language to another, it became impossible to translate the stable words, that is, the connection of units that came in a stable state. In this case, phraseological expressions and combinations existing in those languages began to be studied. As a result, phraseology was initially studied as a subject of literary studies. Later, phraseological expressions were collected in dictionaries and their meanings were explained; it was also mentioned that the meaning and grammatical structure of phraseological units began to be examined in the science of linguistics.
