This article examines the correct use of terms in economic texts and proposes systematic ways of standardizing economic terminology. As a rapidly developing special language, economic discourse is characterized by intensive borrowing, conceptual variation, synonymy, polysemy and inconsistent cross-linguistic transfer, all of which undermine the precision that terminology is expected to guarantee. Drawing on the principles of the General Theory of Terminology and on international standards (ISO 704:2022; ISO 1087:2019), as well as on sociocognitive approaches to terminology, the study identifies and classifies the recurrent categories of problems of term usage in economic texts: term doublets and synonymy, interdisciplinary polysemy, inconsistent borrowing and calque, non-equivalent translation, determinologization and metaphorization, near-synonymous confusion, abbreviation proliferation and neological lag.
