Effective communication between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCs) is a critical determinant of aviation safety. Despite the standardization of phraseology established by the International Civil Aviation Organization, communication breakdowns continue to occur, particularly in non-routine situations that require spontaneous language use. This study examines the nature of speaking barriers in pilot–controller interaction and evaluates the effectiveness of digital language tools in overcoming these barriers. The research adopts a mixed-methods quasi-experimental design involving aviation trainees with intermediate English proficiency (ICAO Levels 3–4). Data were collected through pre- and post-speaking assessments, structured questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the systematic use of digital language tools—such as AI-based communication simulators, speech recognition systems, and pronunciation training applications—significantly improves fluency, pronunciation accuracy, and interactional competence. Additionally, these tools contribute to reducing psychological barriers, including speaking anxiety and lack of confidence. The study proposes an integrative model linking specific categories of speaking barriers with corresponding technological interventions. The results demonstrate that pedagogically guided and integrated use of digital tools produces more substantial improvements than traditional training methods alone. The study offers practical implications for aviation English training programs and highlights the importance of technology-enhanced learning in professional communication.
