Annotatsiya

This article investigates the processes of stylistic and linguistic adaptation in the translation of short stories, with sustained reference to Utkir oshimov’s celebrated Uzbek collection “Dunyoning Ishlari” (The Affairs of Life). Literary translation, particularly of short prose, demands far more than lexical equivalence: it requires the faithful reconstruction of register, tone, narrative voice, figurative language, and culturally embedded meaning. Hoshimov’s prose distinguished by its calibrated mixture of literary and colloquial Uzbek, its idiomatic density, its gentle irony, and its socially precise dialogue presents a paradigmatic case for examining how these demands manifest in practice. Drawing on foundational frameworks from translation studies, including E. Nida’s formal and dynamic equivalence[1], L. Venuti’s domestication and foreignization paradigm[2], and P. Newmark’s taxonomy of translation procedures[3], the study employs a qualitative comparative methodology. Selected passages from the source text are analyzed alongside their translated counterparts, examining adaptive strategies at both macro and micro levels of the text. The analysis is organized around three principal dimensions: the management of register and narrative voice, the translation of idiomatic and colloquial language, including honorific address systems, and the rendering of cultural-specific referents such as community institutions, religious expressions, and comic conventions. The findings demonstrate that effective translation of U. Hoshimov’s work requires a coherent strategic orientation, deep cultural literacy, and sensitivity to the aesthetic experience of the target-language reader. The article concludes by reflecting on the implications of these findings for translation pedagogy and by advocating for greater scholarly attention to Central Asian literary traditions within international translation studies.
