This article provides an in-depth analysis of the novel Our Happy Time by South Korean writer Gong Ji-young, focusing on the themes of internal punishment and the psychological process of guilt awareness. The central emphasis is placed on the internal psychological and moral transformations of the two main characters: Yunsu, a death row inmate, and Yujeong, a woman with a traumatic past and suicidal tendencies. The study explores the multifaceted nature of punishment not only as a legal sentence but also in its internal, moral, and existential dimensions. It examines complex emotional states such as guilt, shame, alienation, remorse, and repentance, and highlights the role of compassion and human connection in the healing of psychological trauma. The analysis reveals that the concept of punishment in the novel is multilayered, encompassing both institutional justice (the death penalty and incarceration) and self-imposed inner condemnation, manifested through memories, feelings of guilt, and the desire for spiritual liberation through repentance. The sincere and emotionally charged dialogue between the protagonists serves as a foundation for their inner transformation, offering a path to moral renewal despite the coldness and despair of the external world.
