This article examines the theoretical and methodological foundations of developing reading competence in the process of professional training of future English teachers. The study analyzes the essence of reading competence, its structural components, and its role within the professional competence of an English language teacher. In addition, effective pedagogical approaches aimed at developing reading competence in higher education institutions are explored. Particular attention is paid to a system of exercises designed on the basis of the three-stage reading model (pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading), which ensures the purposeful and systematic development of students’ reading skills.
