This article analyzes the role of general human body movements, particularly hand gestures, in communication. Hand movements manifest in directed and non-directed forms: the former serve social and communicative purposes, while the latter reflect the subject’s inner state and psychological disposition. Phraseological units convey these processes in a figurative and expressive manner, revealing meanings such as greeting, agreement, threat, and emotional states. Furthermore, the concept of a “sign” has a broader semantic scope than that of a gesture or symbol; in French phraseological expressions, it is realized in both explicit and implicit forms. The study aims to reveal the symbolic significance of hand movements in language and culture, as well as their functional role across a wide range of semantic fields.
