This article analyzes the structural components and pragmatic characteristics of the linguistic system within the English criminal subculture, illustrated specifically through the novel The Godfather by Mario Puzo. The study identifies and categorizes substandard linguistic forms such as criminal argot, invective expressions, vulgarisms, colloquialisms, slang, dialectisms, and neologisms. Each linguistic category serves distinct pragmatic purposes, fulfilling illocutionary functions such as threats, intimidation, coercion, and reinforcing in-group solidarity. Particular attention is paid to the pragmatic features of criminal argot and invective vocabulary, which implicitly convey hidden meanings through euphemisms, metaphors, and coded phrases, thus creating powerful perlocutionary effects like fear, submission, or compliance among interlocutors. Speech acts within criminal discourse predominantly involve commissive and directive acts, employing implicit communicative strategies (implicatures) and presuppositions comprehensible exclusively to insiders. Consequently, this linguistic system simultaneously underscores criminal hierarchy through explicit threats and maintains secrecy via metaphorically encoded messages and euphemistic expressions.
