This article investigates the key challenges involved in promoting innovative thinking skills in English language teaching for engineering students. In modern technical education, English functions not merely as a communication tool but also as an important instrument for cognitive development and professional advancement [1]. Despite ongoing educational reforms, in many English language classrooms, teaching remains centered on grammar acquisition, vocabulary memorization, and reading comprehension, whereas the development of higher-order thinking skills receives insufficient attention. [2]. The research is based on a conceptual and analytical approach and draws on previous studies in the fields of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), engineering education, and twenty-first-century skills development [3]. The analysis reveals a number of significant challenges, including the predominance of teacher-centered instructional practices, the scarcity of problem-solving tasks, weak integration of language and professional content, limited opportunities for student interaction, and the insufficient application of digital and innovative technologies. The article suggests several pedagogical strategies, including problem-based learning, task-based instruction, collaborative learning, the integration of ESP and CLIL principles, and the use of digital technologies. The implementation of these strategies can contribute to the development of both language competence and innovative thinking skills among engineering students [4].
