This article examines the specific features of the use of euphemisms in English and Uzbek literary literature and their pragmatic functions. Euphemism is a linguistic device that expresses concepts that are considered socially or culturally inappropriate, rude or unpleasant in a softened, socially acceptable form, and in literary texts it is manifested as an expression of speech culture based on moral and aesthetic criteria. While in the English literary context, euphemistic units are formed more inextricably linked with political correctness, censorship and individual rights, in Uzbek literature they are based on traditionalism, religious and moral values and national mentality. The article examines the views of advanced linguists, the analysis of literary texts and the communicative functions of euphemisms in a cultural context. It also sheds light on the pragmatic functions of euphemisms, such as politeness, saving face, and alleviating emotional burden, based on a comparative approach.
