The article examines the theoretical and legal foundations of prosecutorial oversight of the enforcement of laws by bodies conducting inquiry. The author summarizes doctrinal approaches to the concept of prosecutorial oversight, offers an original definition, and clarifies the subject matter and limits of such oversight. Particular attention is paid to distinguishing prosecutorial oversight from procedural guidance and departmental control. The article analyzes the parallel regulation contained in Article 382 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Article 28 of the Law “On the Prosecutor’s Office” of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Using the comparative legal method, the author identifies the limits of applying the conclusions of Russian doctrine to the conditions of Uzbekistan and formulates proposals for improving legislation.
